i saw this guy almost everyday - he'd come through my lab about the same time i was heading out...it's so strange that one day somebody is here doing their normal thing and then the next day they are gone. this is the second person this week.

Cal custodian is Richmond's 19th homicide

RICHMOND - Loring Hill drove home from work about 1:30 Wednesday morning, parked his car at his south Richmond home and lugged his recycling bin toward the curb.
He never made it.
Neighbors started calling police about gunfire at 1:36 a.m. Minutes later, an officer found the 39-year-old UC Berkeley custodian dead in the road on the 100 block of South 17th Street.
"It appears that he had just returned home from work. He had parked ... and was in the process of setting out his recycling when he was approached," Lt. Shawn Pickett said. "It appears (the attacker) actually chased him for about half a block."
Detectives heard some street rumors about the shooting but hope the neighborhood will provide more specific information, such as descriptions of the attackers or any vehicles involved.
People gathered to mourn Hill at the intersection of South 17th and Florida Avenue on Wednesday morning declined comment.
Cal hired Hill to work at the Berkeley campus in 1994, spokeswoman Sarah Yang said. He worked an evening shift at the time of his death. His coworkers were not available for comment.
The killing was Richmond's second in three days. Sunday night 31-year-old Glenn Taylor Jr. died after a street shooting in the Iron Triangle neighborhood.
Wednesday's killing was the first reported this year in Richmond's Coronado neighborhood, and the 19th citywide. Richmond police had investigated 19 homicides by this time last year.
